Sleep Country USA shifting to worker ownership
‘Sleep Country USA has reawakened as an employee-owned company.
The Kent-based mattress chain quietly shifted a 25 percent ownership stake to its approximately 350 employees late last month.
The privately held firm picked up the undisclosed tab for the company shares it’s donating to employees and will pay it down over the next nine years, with the ultimate goal of being completely employee-owned, said Terry Horsley, vice president of brand strategy.
The decision follows a national trend favoring employee stock ownership plans, or ESOPs, as a convenient means by which retiring baby-boom business owners can exit at a time when it’s harder to sell a business because banks are reluctant to lend money for acquisitions. The transfer can take many forms, with business owners sometimes profiting from tax benefits and interest charges.’
