FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do you have a question you would like to ask Sleep Country USA? Let us know! Select questions which have the broadest appeal will appear monthly in this column.
Question: How often should I buy a new bed?
Answer: The industry average is 8-10 years.
Question: What's the proper way to turn a mattress and how often should it be done?
Answer: New mattresses should be turned every week for the first few months and every few months thereafter. NEVER use the cord handles to turn the mattress! These will not support the weight of the mattress and will likely pull out. They are for the final positioning only! Don't turn your mattress alone unless it is a twin size. The larger sizes can result in damage to the product or injury to you if you try to turn them by yourself. Get a friend or family member to assist you. One time turn it end over end, the next time rotate it clockwise. If you keep this as your pattern you will get the most even wear and extend the life of your mattress.
Question: Should I buy a hard mattress if I have a bad back?
Answer: Your doctor may have specific recommendations, but in general, you need a mattress that will offer you good support. Good support does not have to be “hard” and the various types of surface materials over the coil units can do much to improve the comfort of a mattress without compromising the support.
Question: What is the best mattress?
Answer: All the major brands have features and benefits which may make them the best mattress for you. This is a very personal comfort issue. A trained salesperson can ask you questions and help narrow the field for you enabling you to make an informed buying decision.
Question: Do I need to buy a box springs unit or can I just replace my mattress?
Answer: A foundation plays an important role in the support your mattress provides. An old foundation unit may not provide sufficient support. Placing a new style one-sided mattress on a flexibile older box spring will allow the mattress to flex and stretch, the result of which is not covered under the warranty. It may even appear that your mattress is sagging, when the problem may be due to a non-supportive foundation. The new foundations are designed without coils and are made with modules, which provide a firm structure for the one-sided mattress.
Question: Is Your Child Ready for a “Big-Bed”?
Answer: The transition from crib to bed is a big step for youngsters. Because of the danger of injury from crawling over a cribside, you should make the switch as soon as your child starts to climb out of the crib and certainly once your baby reaches 35 inches in height. Most children move from crib to bed by the time they´re two or three years old.
Since a child will be spending so much time in bed during their growing years, don´t settle for hand-me-down bedding. Old bedding won´t provide the comfort and support that the active, developing body of a youngster needs. It´s important to invest in a quality mattress and foundation set.
Though most parents still purchase standard “twin” size sleep sets, industry statistics show a rise in the number of parents opting for full size or “double” beds for children. Space permitting, the larger size bed allows greater freedom of movement while sleeping and can provide more comfort for both parent and child during quiet talks and bedtime stories.
We welcome your family in any of our Sleep Country USA stores. Our trained sales professionals are available to help you find the right mattress set for your growing child. You also may want to consider professionally applied fabric protection as a measure of insurance for the inevitable childhood spills and accidents. Ask your salesperson for more information.

Question: Why do all of the mattresses have so many different names?
Answer: There are several good reasons for manufacturers to name beds the way they do.
- There are many mattress models available (Sleep Country carries over 50!), but the difference may not be obvious to a shopper. So names are developed to help you distinguish one from another. Also, manufacturers have found that descriptive names like "Beautyrest" or "Posturepedic" are easier to recall and communicate than industry model numbers.
- Secondly, even these same mattress models change periodically, whether for a new cover or different coil count. As the models change so does the name! This helps both the manufacturers and Sleep Country USA to know which bed is which, as adjustments are made.
- Finally, beds are named differently depending on where the manufacturer is sending them. This helps them to keep accurate performance records according to whether customers like a particular model in Yakima better than they do in Seattle.
